THE STORY OF NINE PINES
Nine Pines is the creative dream of Jim and Christine Klinger. Christine moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio, in the 1970s, graduated from Antioch College and moved away— only to return. Christine and Jim met while they were both doing art fairs and they eventually made their home in Yellow Springs.
When they bought their land on Hilt Road in 2006, the Klingers started exploring and enhancing the large, existing barn and land that would move their future dreams into reality. At the time, they counted nine tall, stately pine trees in the woods along their country lane.
So, they called their land NINE PINES.
In early 2020, when covid-19 shut down all the art fairs Jim had been doing with his raku ceramics for 25 years, the Klingers realized a Plan B was needed. As a musician, Jim had played in rock and blues bands for many years prior to his visual art career, so when covid caused Jim to shift gears - he made a welcome return to his musical roots. Since both the Klingers loved Yellow Springs, they decided to use Nine Pines to share their gratitude by creating a small winery as a place for enjoying wine, art, and music with their community.
Jim even has winemaking in his DNA: “As immigrants coming to the United States in the 1920s,” Jim said, “my family brought some of their Old-World customs to the New World.” On his mother’s side, Jim’s Baba (Macedonian for grandmother) made wine at home. And when Jim was growing up, his father (of German ancestry) made wine in their family home. “I remember going down to the basement every night to help him crush the grapes and then to watch the bubbles as the wine fermented. I saw my dad rack the wine into jugs and, later, enjoy it with his friends.” Thus, the seeds for NINE PINES WINERY were planted.
